UMKC SDI 4 Week Staff
Malcolm was the Assistant Director of Debate at UMKC for nine years. He is currently the policy debate coach at The Meadows School, one of the finest policy debate programs in the nation. His team has received 6 bids to the prestigious Tournament of Champions. Malcolm was a successful college debater from 2003-2007. He won multiple speaker awards at major national tournaments including: 1st speaker at CEDA nationals, 1st speaker at the Kentucky tournament, 10th speaker at the NDT(2006), and 5th speaker at the NDT(2007). He also appeared in the elimination rounds at every major national tournament, and cleared to the elimination rounds at the NDT 4 times. This includes a double-octafinals appearance in 2004 and 2006, an octafinals appearance in 2005, and a finals appearance in 2007 where UMKC finished in 2nd place. In 2006-2007, he received a first round bid to the National Debate Tournament as one of the top 16 teams in the country. As a coach, Malcolm has assisted several competitive teams at the NDT to appearances in the double-octafinals, octafinals, and quarterfinals. He also has experience coaching high school debate, including coaching two TOC semi-finalist teams. In 2016, Malcolm coached the first and second speaker at CEDA nationals, and had a team reach the Octafinals of the NDT. Malcolm has been leading labs at camp since 2004. Malcolm also has extensive experience in high school debate in the Midwest, as he was a successful debater in southwest Missouri from 2000-2002.
Lucia has debated for four years at K-State where she is currently working on her undergraduate degree. She has made appearances in elimination rounds at regional tournaments over the past two years, including the University of Central Oklahoma, the University of Texas at Dallas, Weber State, and the University of Northern Texas, and she was in finals of the NJDDT last year. She qualified for the NDT in 2015 and 2016. Lucia has also been coaching at Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School for the past three years. She coached two teams to NSDA nationals in policy debate last year, three teams to NSDA nationals this year, and coached the first TOC qualifying team from Mt Karmel this season.
Clara Bates just finished her high school debate career at The Meadows School in Las Vegas. She is a two-time TOC qualifier. This year, she earned 6 bids to the TOC, and top 20 speaker awards at multiple national tournaments. She advanced to the Octafinals at St Marks, Greenhill, Notre Dame, MBA, and the NDCA championship. She was a quarterfinalist at Pinecrest, and a semi-finalist at the Glenbrooks tournament. Clara will be continuing her debate career in college as part of the Harvard debate squad.
Andy is currently the Assistant Director of Debate at UMKC. He comes from a family of debate – his parents met in debate at Missouri State and he attended high school and collegiate tournaments in partnerships with his brother and sister. He debated at the Kansas City Kansas Community College and the University of Texas, San Antonio, where he was a three-time qualifier to the NDT. He routinely advanced to elimination rounds at both regional and major national tournaments, including GSU, UNLV, Northwestern, UT, and CEDA Nationals. He has coached multiple qualifiers to the National Debate Tournament, teams in late out rounds at some of the largest parliamentary debate tournaments, and a 2017 First Round At-Large team and NDT Quarterfinalist.

Linda returns to UMKC SDI after another successful season at Barstow, where she has qualified teams to the TOC. Before moving to Barstow, Linda proudly re-established the UMKC debate program in 1986 and went on to win the Brady Lee Garrison Award for new programs in 1987. That success was followed by the CEDA National Championship of ’94, and the National Sweepstakes (points) Championship of both CEDA and the NDT in ’95. She coached 20 years at UMKC, qualifying teams to the NDT from 1996-2007, leaving the year after UMKC won the Herbert Walker Trophy as the runner up at the 2007 NDT.
Justin Stanley has been competing/coaching debate for 25 years. He began his debate career at Blue Springs High School in Blue Springs, MO. In college he competed at Missouri State University where he qualified to the National Debate Tournament 3 times. As a competitor he routinely advance to the elimination rounds of regional and national tournaments. He was an assistant coach at UMKC for two years where he was part of the coaching staff that advanced a team to the final round of the National Debate Tournament. He has been a coach and faculty member at Johnson County Community College for the past 7 years. In that time he has won 2 community college national championships, coached teams to the elimination round of CEDA Nationals, and consistently has teams in the elimination rounds of regional tournaments in the open, junior-varsity, and novice division.
Allie debated at the University of Northern Iowa for four years and coached there for two years. As a competitor, she debated in elimination rounds at the following tournaments: Illinois State, KCKCC, the NJDDT, Wayne State, Iowa, Augustana, Missouri State, the University of North Texas and the University of Texas-Dallas. Allie is now an assistant debate coach at the University of Kansas where she coached teams to the elimination rounds of every national and regional tournament during the 2016-2017 season. Three of these teams were in elimination rounds at the National Debate Tournament. Two of these teams were First-Round At Large teams. Allie balances coaching at KU with working with the high-schoolers at Barstow, who consistently were in elimination rounds and won speaker awards. She has worked at debate camps in the area for the last four years and has a wide range of argumentative expertise.
Becca is an assistant debate coach at the University of Georgia, where she is also pursuing a PhD in Communication Studies. This past season, Becca coached her teams to first place finishes at Samford, Liberty, Miami, and Navy. She helped two sophomore teams qualify to the National Debate Tournament and one reached the elimination rounds. She has experience coaching all levels of college policy debate, including novice and JV national champions at the University of Florida and first-round at large bid teams at Wake Forest University. While coaching at Wake Forest, Becca was recognized as the District 6 Critic of the Year and the Matt Grindy Assistant Coach of the Year in 2016.
Eli is currently the assistant coach at University of Central Oklahoma, where he has coached a team to elimination rounds of the national tournament at Weber State, Wake Forest, and UMKC. His top team at UCO advanced to the octafinals of the 2017 National Debate Tournament. He has experience coaching teams young and old to multiple late elim appearances at regional tournaments including UTD, UNT, and UCO. He has also worked as an assistant coach for College Preparatory school, where he coached multiple teams to elimination rounds a major national high school tournaments. He debated at North Texas where he appeared in outrounds of several major national tournaments. He was also on the coaching staff of University of Georgia during their copeland-winning season, culminating in an appearance in the sweet 16 of the NDT. This is Eli’s third summer at UMKC.
Maggie debated for Trinity University, where she was a multiple time NDT qualifier, and an NDT outround participant. She cleared at several major national and regional tournaments. Since graduating from Trinity, she has gone on to coach at Harvard University where she coached multiple teams to the elimination rounds of every national tournament, including the National Debate Tournament. This is Maggie’s first year at the UMKC Summer Debate Institute.
