The UMKC Summer Debate Institute has been training debaters of all levels of experience for competitive excellence for over 20 years. UMKC SDI students have gone on to compete in elimination rounds at national tournaments, including the TOC, and a final round appearance at NFL nationals. The SDI has also trained multiple state qualifying debaters in Missouri and Kansas. Located in the heart of Kansas City near the beautiful Plaza District, the SDI provides first class staff and facilities to ensure that students are well prepared and well trained for the upcoming season. The camp is run by Malcolm Gordon, the Assistant Director of Debate at UMKC, who has over 10 years of experience in camp administration.
The 2016 UMKC SDI offers two sessions:
Four Week Lab (June 25-July 23)
The 4 week lab will be returning to UMKC for a fourth year. This lab is designed to teach students the fundamentals of argumentation in the context of competitive debate. Students will receive training that is process-oriented. This includes: the creation of files from scratch, effective pre-tournament preparation, the fundamentals of researching case specific strategies, the creation and execution of new affirmatives, how to perfect judge interaction, and extensive practice on in-round execution. The lab is ideal for students on small squads, young students who need more training in research and preparation as well as execution, and students who want to maximize their regional and national competitive opportunities. Our goal is to provide students with the tools necessary to be self-sufficient and successful.
Two Week Lab (July 9-23)
The UMKC SDI will offer two week labs for students of all experience levels. Each lab will be run by two qualified staff members. The level of research and preparation for each lab will be tailored to the needs of students. Labs will teach students the research process, fundamentals of each speech, and provide students with multiple practice debates. Two week students will receive a comprehensive evidence packet on the first day of camp, allowing them to balance research and execution over the 14-day experience.
